Applied Research & Analysis

Selected consultancy research, evaluations and analytical work

Research and analysis have been recurring elements of my consulting work for more than two decades, ranging from ongoing analytical support in long-term client relationships to larger standalone studies, evaluations and reports.

In advisory work, analysis has often involved understanding how organizations and brands are represented and positioned, how competitors and markets are developing, and how different stakeholders and audiences perceive particular issues. This has included media and narrative analysis, stakeholder and audience research, competitor and market analysis, environmental scanning and research synthesis. The findings have provided a basis for strategic choices, positioning and communication.

Larger commissioned studies have addressed questions requiring more extensive investigation: what users and stakeholders need, how places and countries are perceived, what effects an activity or investment generates, and how economic, social or less tangible forms of value can be identified and understood.

A recurring feature of this work has been bringing structure and evidence to questions that are not always easy to measure or articulate, and translating findings into reports, recommendations, analytical frameworks, and other forms of decision support.

Selected Areas of Work

Public Sector, Stakeholders & Evaluation

Research, evaluation and stakeholder and user studies for government agencies and other public-sector organizations, often concerning information needs, audiences, public information and organizational development.

Assignments have included major qualitative studies for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, audience research for the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), information-needs research for the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority (SSI), and evaluation of international environmental-technology visits for IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and regional partners.

Places, Tourism & Regional Development

Studies of destinations, tourism, place identity and the economic, social and indirect value associated with places, activities and regional development.

Assignments have included multi-year destination research for Position Skåne (later Visit Skåne), studies of film-induced tourism and destination images for Region Skåne and Oresund Film Commission, regional and tourism-related analysis for Stockholm Business Region, work for Filmby Aarhus and Nordic tourism organizations, and a value analysis of Tom Tits Experiment in Södertälje.

Media, Narratives & Creative Industries

Analysis of media representations, international reputation and narratives, together with studies of film, television and other creative industries and the wider value they generate.

Examples include qualitative studies of Sweden’s international media image for the Swedish Institute, analyses of film and television production for Film Capital Stockholm, Filmpool Nord and Stockholm Business Region, and research into the economic and wider value of fashion-related activities in Stockholm.

Some assignments naturally cut across these areas. Film and television, for example, have been studied both as creative industries and as drivers of tourism, regional development, media exposure and place-related value.

Research & Practice

The reports above represent selected larger assignments rather than the full range of analytical work undertaken in consulting engagements.

Some of this professional work has also connected with my later academic research. Most directly, the value analysis of Tom Tits Experiment developed into peer-reviewed research on indirect value and place branding. Earlier work on media narratives, destinations, tourism, and place-related value also provides professional context for my subsequent research on Narrative Capital, place identity, and value creation.

Academic research, publications and current projects are presented separately under Research.
